FLORIDA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Florida St. University has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's latest NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Seminoles swept North Carolina St. in a 3-game series over the past weekend and have won 10 straight in rolling to a 24-3 overall record (6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference mark). Florida St. has been ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball poll five of the last six weeks. Florida St. is hitting .329 as a team and averaging nine runs per contest. The pitching staff has a 2.58 ERA with a strikeout to walk ratio of nearly 3:1 (270 strikeouts and 95 walks).

St. Fullerton has won 11 straight, and Alabama 13 of its last 14. Two other teams worth noting are Southern California (winners of 7 of its last eight) and Oral Roberts (10 wins in a row). Florida International took the biggest tumble in the poll this week after losing four straight games last week (13th to unranked). Nebraska makes its first appearance in the poll in years after rolling to a 16-6 overall record (5-1 Big 12) and 7 wins in a row. The Cornhuskers have scored 132 runs in its last 7 games for an average of 18.8 per contest. It includes a 50-3 win over Chicago State last week which set an NCAA Div. I record for runs in one game by one team.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

LHP Adam Wynegar, James Madison: Wynegar hurled the first no-hitter for James Madison since 1989 as the Dukes won a 7-inning contest against IUPUI (Indiana Univ.-Purdue Univ. at Indianapolis), 16-0. He struck out 16 batters, walked three and hit one hitter. It marked the seventh no-hitter in school history.

LHP Barry Zito, Southern California: Zito struck out 16 batters in seven innings during a 17-1 win over Arizona. Sixteen strikeouts are the most by a Trojan since at least 1987 (as far back as USC single-game records are currently available), and Zito did it twice in eight days. A week ago, he fanned 16 against Oregon State. This marks the third time in his career he has struck out 16 in a game. He did it once as a 1997 freshman when playing for U.C. Santa Barbara.

OF Jason Sparks, Tulane: Sparks belted 6 home runs in four games last week and knocked in 12 runs as he hit .533 (8-for-15). Sparks had at least one home run in every game, including three in the final game of a 3-game series against N.C. Charlotte.
