"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" FRESHMEN ALL-AMERICAN BASEBALL TEAM

TUCSON, Ariz. — The 2007 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-Americans feature a wealth of baseball talent.

The team is headed by Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman Pitcher of The Year Ryan Berry of Rice and Freshman Player of The Year 1B Dustin Ackley of North Carolina.

Here is a rundown on the 2007 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-Americans as chosen by Collegiate Baseball.

Starting Pitchers

RHP Ryan Berry, Rice — Berry, Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman Pitcher of The Year, had a remarkable campaign for the Owls as he was named first team Conference USA and captured Freshman of The Year honors as well by the league. Heading into super regional competition, he was 11-2 with a 2.72 ERA. He struck out 109 batters and walked 30 in 109 innings. Berry tied the Rice freshman school record set by former first round draft pick Matt Anderson with 11 wins this season.

RHP Mike Leake, Arizona St. — Leake was fabulous in his initial campaign with the Sun Devils as he was named a first team Pac-10 selection. Heading into regional action, he was 12-1 with a 3.72 ERA and had fanned 75 batters with 26 walks in 101 2/3 innings. He started 10 games this season with one complete game and one save.

LHP Eric Erickson, Miami (Fla.) — A first team Atlantic Coast Conference selection, Erickson was 8-3 with a 1.93 ERA late in the season. He posted 51 strikeouts and 38 walks with one save.

LHP Justin Marks, Louisville — Marks was a second team Big East Conference pick as well as Rookie of The Year in the league. He posted a 6-2 record, 2.51 ERA and fanned 70 batters in 79 innings.

LHP Mike Minor, Vanderbilt — Minor was named to the All-Freshmen team in the Southeastern Conference. He posted a 7-1 record, 3.05 ERA and fanned 61 batters with 15 walks and recorded 2 saves.

LHP Nathan Baker, Mississippi — Baker was an All-Freshmen pick in the Southeastern Conference. He posted a 6-1 record, 3.66 ERA and fanned 38 batters with 17 walks late in the season.

RHP Casey Schmidt, Creighton — Schmidt finished the season with a 6-1 record and 3.12 ERA in 16 appearances. In 43 1/3 innings, he struck out 27 batters and walked 11. He posted a 5-0 record and 0.98 ERA in 27 2/3 innings over his final eight appearances.

RHP Brad Altbach, Bradley — Named Missouri Valley Freshman Player of The Year, he posted a 7-2 record, 2.66 ERA and fanned 37 batters in 61 innings.

LHP Wes Musick, Houston — A first team Conference USA selection, Musick was 6-3 with a 2.58 ERA as he fanned 63 batters with 28 walks.

RHP Jerry Sullivan, Oral Roberts — Sullivan finished the year with a 5-0 record and 2.04 ERA. He appeared in 12 games and struck out 45 batters while walking eight in 53 innings.

LHP Rex Brothers, Lipscomb — Named second team Atlantic Sun and league Freshman of The Year, opponents could only hit .208 against him. Brothers posted a 7-4 record, 3.51 ERA and fanned 93 batters in 16 games.

RHP Todd Roth, Pennsylvania — A first team Ivy League pick, he was also named Rookie of The Year in the league with a 6-2 record and 1.98 ERA.

RHP Brian Pendergast, Manhattan — Pendergast put up impressive numbers as he posted a 6-0 record with 3 saves and a 2.45 ERA late in the season.

RHP Ricky Bowen, Mississippi St. — Late in the season Bowen had a 5-1 record and 3.91 ERA with 24 strikeouts, 4 saves and only six walks.

RHP Russ Tomlinson, College of Charleston — Tomlinson posted a 5-1 record, 2.76 ERA and 2 saves late in the season. He fanned 20 batters as well.

RHP Ryan Buch, Monmouth — A second team Northeast Conference pick and Rookie of The Year in the league, he posted an 8-2 record and 2.23 ERA with 66 strikeouts.

RHP Tom Costigan, Manhattan — Costigan posted a 6-1 record and 3.34 ERA with 38 strikeouts, 9 walks and 1 save.

RHP Tony Sedlmeyer, Purdue — Posted a 6-4 record and was named an All-Big Ten third team selection. In 12 starts, Sedlmeyer had a 4.34 ERA and struck out 27 in 56 innings.

LHP Bart Carter, Western Kentucky — Carter was named Freshman of The Year in the Sun Belt Conference. He posted a 6-5 record, 4.13 ERA, 2 complete games and fanned 64 batters with 37 walks in 85 innings.

RHP Blake Cooper, South Carolina — Cooper posted a 6-1 record, 2.76 ERA and fanned 34 batters with 16 walks late in the season.

RHP Matt Bischoff, Purdue — Named Big Ten Freshman of The Year, he posted a 3-2 record and 2.85 ERA with 61 strikeouts.

LHP Matt Zielinski, Richmond — Chosen the Atlantic-10 Rookie of The Year, Zielinski posted a 3.47 ERA with 66 strikeouts and 6 walks this season.

RHP Jeremy Atkins, Lafayette — Atkins posted a 6-2 record and 2.98 ERA with 28 strikeouts and 17 walks.

RHP Mike Ford, U.C. Santa Barbara — Ford led all freshmen in the Big West Conference in innings pitched and strikeouts with 68. He was the first freshman since Barry Zito to lead the team in strikeouts. His best game of the season was when he took a perfect game in the seventh inning against Texas Christian.

 

Relief Pitchers

A.J. Griffin, San Diego — A first team West Coast Conference pick, Griffin posted a 6-1 record with 11 saves and a 2.63 ERA as he appeared in 33 games. Griffin fanned 63 batters and walked 18.

Bryant George, Southern Illinois — George recorded 9 saves with a 3.09 ERA late in the season. He fanned 23 batters with 10 walks.

Joe Kelly, U.C. Riverside — A first team Big West Conference pick, he posted 4 saves, a 1-1 record and 0.83 ERA late in the season with 16 strikeouts.

Scott Migl, Texas A&M — Migl registered a 6-1 record and 2.20 ERA with 26 strikeouts and 13 walks late in the season.

Stephen Strasburg, San Diego St. — A second team Mountain West selection and co-Freshman Player of The Year in the league, he posted 7 saves and a 2.50 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 36 innings late in the season.

 

Catchers

Tommy Medica, Santa Clara — A first team West Coast Conference pick and a member of the All-Freshmen team in the league, Medica hit .393 with 8 doubles, 4 triples, 4 stolen bases and 18 RBIs late in the season. He also is a superb defensive receiver.

Richard Jones, The Citadel — Jones was named Southern Conference Freshman of The Year and named to the 2007 All-Southern Conference tournament team. He hit .335 with 15 homers, 11 doubles and 61 RBI. He blasted 12 of 15 home runs in his last 25 games and paced the Bulldogs with 15 multi-RBI games. He finished in three top 10 Southern Conference lists, including tied for fourth in home runs (5), tied for seventh in RBI (61) and sixth in slugging percentage (.645).

Trevor Coleman, Missouri — Coleman was named Big 12 Conference Freshman of The Year. He hit .282 with 9 homers, 11 doubles and 42 RBI.

Cortez Cole, Jackson St. — A first team Southwestern Conference selection, Cole hit .357 with 8 doubles, 4 triples and knocked in 31 runs. He also swiped 14 of 17 bases this season.

Wes Dorrell, Cal Poly SLO — A second team Big West Conference pick, Dorrell hit .303 with 6 homers, 9 doubles and 40 RBI.

Dwight Childs, Arizona — Childs was an honorable mention selection in the Pac-10 Conference. A superb defensive catcher, he hit 7 doubles, 2 triples and knocked in 23 runs late in the season.

Jim Klocke, Southeast Missouri St. — Klocke was named to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Freshmen team. He hit .314 with 10 doubles, 3 homers and 36 RBI.

Myckie Lugbauer, Maine — Named America East Conference Rookie of The Year, Lugbauer hit .301 with 5 homers, 9 doubles and 27 RBI.

 

First Basemen

Dustin Ackley, North Carolina — Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman Player of The Year, Ackley put up mammoth numbers this season for the Tar Heels as he was named first team Atlantic Coast Conference and ACC Freshman Player of The Year. Heading into regional competition, he was hitting .437 with 19 doubles, 7 homers, 63 RBI and had swiped 10 of 13 bases. Ackley posted 107 hits in 245 at-bats and only struck out 16 times as he scored 59 runs.

Justin Bour, George Mason — Bour was named to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Freshmen team as he hit .310 with 14 homers and collected 54 RBIs

Marc Krauss, Ohio — Krauss was the Mid-American Conference Freshman of The Year as he led Ohio in hitting (.369), home runs (8), doubles (19), total bases (114) and slugging percentage (.610). He led the Bobcats with 23 multi-hit games and tied for the team lead with 13 multi-RBI games. His most memorable game of the season was against Youngstown St. as he belted three home runs.

Shaun Kort, Nevada — Named Freshman of The Year in the Western Athletic Conference and a second team WAC selection, he hit .398 with 15 doubles, 5 homers, 47 RBI and scored 40 runs.

Aaron Baker, Oklahoma — Baker started all but one game for the Sooners and hit .323 with 4 homers, 16 doubles and knocked in 50 runs. He made only two errors at first base all season.

Steven Caseres, James Madison — Named an All-Freshman with by the Colonial Athletic Association, he hit .298 with 11 homers and 40 RBIs.

Yan Gomes, Tennessee — An All-Freshman Southeastern Conference selection, Gomes hit .320 with 9 doubles, 7 HR, 4 stolen bases and knocked in 39 runs late in the season.

 

Second Basemen

Zach Miller, Mississippi — Miller was named an All-Freshman Southeastern Conference pick as he hit .405 with 6 doubles, 2 homers, 1 triple, 2 stolen bases and knocked in 20 runs late in the season.

Dallas Poulk, N.C. State — Poulk had a remarkable season as he hit .394 to lead Wolfpack batters by 78 points. In addition, he hit 8 doubles, 4 triples and drove in 26 runs in 56 games. He also swiped 7 bases, and his slugging percentage was .506 while his on-base percentage stood at .441.

Ben Yoder, Bucknell — Yoder was named Rookie of The Year in the Patriot League. He was second in batting average for Bucknell (.317) and first among league freshmen. The two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week honoree collected 38 hits, including five doubles, and two triples as he scored 21 runs with 12 RBIs in 37 games.

Casey Frawley, Stetson — An All-Freshman Atlantic Sun selection and second team Atlantic Sun choice, he hit .324 with 3 doubles, 1 triple, 6 stolen bases and 24 RBI.

Jason Jamerson, Butler — Jamerson was a second team Horizon League pick and also named to the All-Freshman team in the league after a superb season.

Jordin Hood, Northern Illinois — Hood was named a second team Mid-American Conference pick after hitting .293 with 5 doubles, 5 homers and 3 triples with 22 RBI and 8 stolen bases.

Randy Wells, St. Mary’s — Wells was an All-Freshman West Coast Conference pick as he hit .364 with 9 doubles, 1 homer, 3 triples, 5 stolen bases and 33 RBI late in the season.

T.J. Thompson, North Florida — Thompson was a first team Atlantic Sun selection and also was named to the All-Freshman team in the Atlantic Sun. Thompson finishing second on the team with a .326 batting average. He also came through in the clutch on several occasions for the Ospreys, tallying five game-winning RBIs. In the last third of the season, Thompson stepped into the leadoff role and put together a .400 on-base percentage along with 10 doubles.

 

Shortstops

Brandon Turner, Mississippi St. — Turner hit .400 with 10 doubles and 43 RBI for the Bulldogs.

Josh Prince, Texas — Prince hit .380 with 6 doubles and 12 RBIs for the Longhorns late in the season.

Mike Gilmartin, Wofford — Gilmartin posted a .328 batting average with 11 homers, 9 doubles and 44 RBIs.

Austin Knight, Dallas Baptist — Knight started every game for Dallas Baptist this season and hit .338 with 12 doubles, 2 triples and 43 RBI.

Brandon Jarvis, Savannah St. — Jarvis hit .321 with 7 homers, 14 doubles and swiped 13 bases this season with 36 RBI.

Cole Figueroa, Florida — Figueroa, an All-Freshman selection with the Southeastern Conference, hit .323 with 8 homers, 7 doubles and 39 RBIs.

Grant Green, Southern California — Named co-Newcomer of The Year in the Pac-10 with only nine errors all season, Green hit .316 with 10 triples (USC record), 14 doubles, 2 homers and 24 RBI.

Kyle Bellows, San Jose St. — A second team Western Athletic Conference pick, he hit .344 with 11 doubles, 3 homers and 38 RBI last season.

 

Third Basemen

Matt Prokopowicz, Hofstra — Named the Colonial Athletic Association Freshman of The Year, Prokopowicz was also a second team all league selection. He hit .416 with 82 hits, 6 homers and 52 RBI late in the season.

Jason Stidham, Florida St. — A first team Atlantic Coast Conference selection, Stidham hit .366 with 6 homers, 17 doubles and 48 RBIs in 61 games. He collected 86 hits and also swiped five bases.

Matt Browning, James Madison — Browning hit .393 with 4 homers, 10 doubles and 31 RBI. He put together a 14-game hitting streak as well.

Diego Seastrunk, Rice — Named to the Conference USA All-Freshmen team, he started 40 games and hit .305 with 9 doubles and knocked in 33 games late in the season.

Drew Lydon, Navy — Lydon was a second team Patriot League pick as he hit .326 with 5 doubles, 1 homers and 1 triple with 20 RBI late in the season.

Jace Brinkerhoff, Utah Valley St. — Brinkerhoff hit .406 with 11 doubles, 4 homers, 1 triple and 2 stolen bases as he collected 26 RBIs late in the season.

Nick Harris, Southeastern Missouri St. — Harris was named to the Ohio Valley All-Freshmen team as he hit .305 with 10 doubles, 8 homers, 4 triples and swiped 8 bases with 37 RBI late in the season.

Steve Parker, Brigham Young — Named Co-Freshman of The Year in the Mountain West Conference, Parker hit .317 with 6 homers, 32 RBI and scored 39 runs. He had an on-base percentage of .443 which ranked fifth in the league.

Raynor Campbell, Baylor — Campbell hit .321 with 13 doubles, 5 homers and swiped 6 bases. He also knocked on 29 runs for the Bears.

 

Outfielders

Jordan Henry, Mississippi — The Freshman of The Year in the Southeastern Conference, Henry hit .393 with 1 homers, 4 doubles, 2 triples and stole 12 bases with 14 RBI.

Aaron Roberts, Southern Illinois — A first team Missouri Valley conference choice, Roberts hit .372 with 4 doubles, 1 triple, 11 stolen bases and 13 RBIs late in the season.

Darryl Evans, Florida A&M — A first team Mid-Eastern Conference selection, Evans hit .366 with 4 homers, 11 doubles and 42 RBI. He also swiped 18 of 22 bases.

Gabe Cohen, UCLA — A first team Pac-10 Conference pick, he was also named co-Newcomer of The Year in the league. He hit .360 with 9 homers and 32 RBI.

Joey Gonzales, U.C. Riverside — A second team Big West Conference pick, he was named league Freshman Player of The Year. Gonzales hit .360 and had a 14-game hitting streak late in the season.

John Malloy, La Salle — An All-Freshman Atlantic-10 selection, he hit .339 with 16 doubles, 2 triples, 5 stolen bases and 16 RBI.

Angelo Songco, Loyola Marymount — Named Freshman of The Year in the West Coast Conference, he hit .321 with 22 doubles, 4 homers and 26 RBI late in the season.

Kyle Smith, Texas Southern — Named Freshman of The Year in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, he hit .361 with 26 RBI.

Tim Fedroff, North Carolina — A second team Atlantic Coast Conference pick, Fedroff hit .336 with 4 homers, 4 doubles, 2 triples and swiped 4 bases as he knocked in 22 runs.

Mark Sobolewski, Miami (Fla.) — Sobolewski hit .344 with 15 doubles, 6 homers and knocked in 49 runs. He also swiped 12 bases for the Hurricanes.

Ian Choy, Canisius — A first team Metro Atlantic pick and league Freshman Player of The Year, he hit .370 with 15 runs, 61 hits and 26 RBI.

Christian Beatty, North Carolina A&T — A first team Mid-Eastern Conference pick, Beatty was also named the league’s Freshman of The Year. He hit .386 with 10 homers, 9 doubles, and 2 triples.

Anthony Gallas, Kent St. — A first team Mid-American Conference pick, Gallas hit .329 with 8 homers, 10 doubles and 34 RBI late in the season.

Jeff Kobernus, California — An honorable mention choice by the Pac-10 Conference, he hit .340 with 5 doubles and 12 stolen bases with 19 RBI late in the season.

Blake Dean, Louisiana St. — Named to the All-Freshmen team in the Southeastern Conference, Dean hit .333 with 7 homers, 11 doubles and knocked in 42 runs late in the season.

Brian Kemp, St. John’s — Kemp was a third team Big East Conference pick. He hit .353 with 9 doubles, 2 triples, 19 stolen bases and knocked in 27 runs.

Robby Kuzdale, High Point — A second team Big South Conference pick, he hit .316 with 3 homers, 9 doubles and 17 stolen bases with 31 RBI late in the season.

Henry Dunn, Binghamton — A second team America East Conference choice, Dunn hit .277 with 3 doubles, 20 RBI and 6 stolen bases in 40 games.

 

Designated Hitters

Billy Anderson, Central Michigan — Anderson was a second team Mid-American Conference pick. He hit .430 in 39 games with 6 doubles, 3 triples, 4 stolen bases and 24 RBI.

Richard Jones, The Citadel — Jones was named Freshman of The Year in the Southern Conference. He hit .331 with 12 homers and 55 RBI.

Justin Milo, Cornell — A first team Ivy League selection, Milo hit .426 in 19 games with 10 doubles, 2 homers and 12 RBI.

Michael Stephan, Stony Brook — A second team America East and All-Freshman league pick, Stephan hit .328 with 7 doubles, 3 homers and 16 RBI.

Tim Palincsar, Texas-San Antonio — Named Freshman of The Year in the Southland Conference, he hit .307 with 5 homers, 34 RBI and swiped 12 bases.

Vinnie Catricala, Hawaii — A second team Western Athletic Conference pick, Catricala hit .318 with 2 homers, 6 doubles, 1 triple and 25 RBI late in the season.

 

Multiple Position Athletes

Anthony Aliotti, St. Mary’s — Aliotti pitched and played first base for St. Mary’s this season and was superb in both. Late in the season, he was hitting .333 with 32 RBI and posted a 6-4 record on the mound with a 4.44 ERA and 46 strikeouts with only 14 walks.

Jeff Lockwood, Tennessee — Named to the All-Freshmen team in the Southeastern Conference, Lockwood posted 8 saves with a 3.31 ERA and hit .317 with 6 doubles and 28 RBIs.

Richie Derbak, Eastern Illinois — A member of the Ohio Valley Conference All-Freshmen team, Derbak hit .323 with 9 doubles, 24 RBI and posted 5 saves on the mound.
