"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S"
FRESHMEN ALL-AMERICAN BASEBALL TEAM
TUCSON, Ariz. The
2002 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team features a whos who of tremendous
baseball talent.
The team is headed by Collegiate
Baseball newspapers Freshman National Players of The Year in RHP Philip Humber
of Rice, 1B Vincent Sinisi of Rice and 1B Darryl Lawhorn of East Carolina.
Here is a rundown on the
2002 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team as chosen by Collegiate Baseball newspaper:
Pitchers
 | RHP
Philip Humber, Rice Humber, Collegiate Baseballs co-National
Freshman Player of The Year, was superb with a 11-1 record and 2.50 ERA. He fanned 121
batters and walked only 38 in 101 innings. Humber was a first team Western Athletic
Conference selection who was also named Freshman of The Year. |
 | RHP
Derek DeCarlo, Florida International Freshman of The Year and a second
team Sun Belt selection, DeCarlo posted an 11-0 record and 3.53 ERA as he fanned 92
batters and walked 37 batters. |
 | RHP
Chris Lambert, Boston College The First Team Big East selection and
Pitcher of The Year in the conference was nothing short of sensational. He posted a 9-3
record, 2.76 ERA and five complete games. In addition, the Freshman of The Year in the Big
East struck out 87 batters and walked 51. |
 | RHP
Matt Durkin, San Jose St. Durkin had an impressive 11-2 record along with
a 2.55 ERA, 4 complete games and 84 strikeouts along with only 21 walks in his freshman
campaign. |
 | RHP
Grant Johnson, Notre Dame Johnson had an 8-4 record and 3.35 ERA for the
Irish. He posted 82 strikeouts and 35 walks. His best outing was in regional action as he
one-hit South Alabama with eight strikeouts. |
 | LHP Taylor Tankersley,
Alabama Posted an 8-5 record with 7 saves and a 2.62 ERA in 68 2/3
innings. He allowed 55 hits and 20 earned runs with 65 strikeouts and only 20 walks. The
eight wins tied a single-season freshman record at Alabama. |
 | RHP Justin Verlander, Old Dominion
The Freshman of The Year in the Colonial Athletic Association, Verlander struck out
137 batters and posted a glistening 1.90 ERA this season as he posted three shutouts. |
 | LHP Glenn Swanson, U.C. Irvine
Swanson posted a 7-3 record, 3.22 ERA and two saves. In addition, he struck out 68
batters and walked only 34. |
 | LHP Robert Swindle, Charleston
Southern Swindle struck out 95 batters and walked only 14 this season,
amazing numbers for a freshman. |
 | LHP Zach Jackson, Louisville
Jackson had a superb season for the Cardinals as he posted a 7-1 record and 4.42
ERA. He fanned 34 batters and walked only 13. |
 | LHP Jeremy Sowers, Vanderbilt
Sowers fanned 75 batters and walked only 24 as he posted a 4-5 record and 4.09 ERA
in the tough Southeastern Conference. |
 | LHP Scott Lewis, Ohio St.
Lewis had a glistening 2.91 ERA and 5-2 record as he struck out 68 batters and
walked only 25. |
 | RHP A.J. Shappi, U.C. Riverside
Shappi posted a 6-3 record, 3.55 ERA and two complete games as he fanned 66 batters
and walked 24. |
 | RHP Eric Posthumus, U.C. Santa
Barbara Posthumus registered a 6-1 record and struck out 48 batters with
27 walks in 2002. |
 | RHP Shawn Phillips, Delaware St.
Phillips recorded a 7-3 slate along with a 3.69 ERA. He also registered 5 complete
games as he struck out 77 batters and walked 22. |
 | RHP Mike Parisi, Manhattan
Parisi put together a 6-4 record with 3 saves and a 3.19 ERA. He also struck out 56
batters and walked 20. |
 | RHP Justin Orenouff, George
Washington Orenouff had a superb freshman season as he posted a 7-2
record, 2.13 ERA and 54 strikeouts with 14 walks. |
 | RHP Brian Nicholas, Alabama St.
The Freshman of The Year and First Team Southwestern Athletic Conference performer
was superb in his initial year. He posted a 7-4 record, 4.06 ERA, 4 complete games and
fanned 52 batters with 30 walks. |
 | RHP Jack Muscalus, Lehigh
The Freshman Player of The Year and second team Patriot League performer posted a
7-3 record and 3.54 ERA. |
 | LHP Ryan Gehring, Illinois-Chicago
Gehring was Freshman of The Year in the Horizon League. He registered eight wins
and a 3.13 ERA with 67 strikeouts. |
Relief Pitchers
 | Huston Street, Texas
A first team Big 12 Conference pick and Freshman Pitcher of The Year in the Big 12, Street
had a microscopic 0.96 ERA with 9 saves and a 4-1 overall record. He struck out 41 batters
and walked only five in 37 1/3 innings. |
 | Byron Binda, Coastal Carolina
Binda posted a 5-1 record with 1 save and a 3.10 ERA. He struck out 47 batters and
walked 21. |
 | David Purcey, Oklahoma
Purcey posted six saves with a 3.04 ERA and also had a 3-3 overall record. He
fanned 54 batters and walked 24. |
 | Greg Bunn, East Carolina
Bunn had a 2.76 ERA and saved four games with 23 strikeouts and nine walks. |
 | Travis Wendte, Missouri
Wendte saved five games for the Tigers and had a 3-2 record with a 2.52 ERA. He
fanned 40 batters and walked 11. |
 | Cliff Russum, Southern Mississippi
Russum posted 4 saves and a 1-2 record with a 1.65 ERA. He fanned 15 batters and
walked six. |
Catchers
 | Grant Rembert, N.C. Asheville
A superb defensive catcher, Rembert hit .365 with 5 homers, 7 doubles and 40 RBI
this season. |
 | Aaron Hathaway, Washington
Hathaway hit .329 with 4 homers, 6 doubles and 29 RBI this season and swiped 9 of
14 bases. |
 | Brad Davis, Long Beach St.
Davis is a superb defensive catcher who hit .319 this season and was a second team
Big West Conference selection. |
 | Brad Willcutt, Southern Mississippi
An All-Freshmen Conference USA selection, Willcutt cracked 16 doubles, 7 homers and
knocked in 48 runs this season. |
 | Ben Crabtree, Ohio
Crabtree hit .345 with 8 doubles, 4 homers and 34 RBI this season and was superb behind
the plate. |
First Basemen
 | Vincent Sinisi, Rice
Sinisi, Collegiate Baseballs co-National Freshman Player of The Year, was
named Player of The Year in the Western Athletic Conference and was a first team WAC
selection. He hit .433 with 22 doubles, 9 homers and 73 RBI in addition to collecting 104
hits and scoring 58 runs. Sinisi also swiped 9 bases. |
 | Darryl Lawhorn, East Carolina
Lawhorn, Collegiate Baseballs co-National Freshman Player of The Year
and a first team Conference USA selection, put up huge numbers this season as he hit .419
with 17 homers, 12 doubles, 61 RBI and swiped 14 bases. |
 | Phil Rothkugel, Central Connecticut
St. Named Freshman of The Year in the Northeast Conference, Rothkugel hit
.391 with 8 homers and 48 RBI. |
 | Ryan Cuscovitch, Hartford
Cuscovitch was named to the first team America East Conference squad. He hit .323
with 5 homers and 35 RBI. |
 | Kyle Larsen, Washington
Larsen hit .363 with 5 homers, 11 doubles and 36 RBI during the past season. |
 | Tony Roth, Creighton
Roth, Freshman of The Year in the Missouri Valley Conference, hit .345 with 4 homers, 12
doubles and 26 RBI. He also swiped 8 of 11 bases. |
 | Matt Anderson, U.C. Irvine
Anderson, a second team Big West Conference pick, hit .404 with 3 homers, 12
doubles and 30 RBI. |
 | Chris Gaskin, Manhattan
Named Rookie of The Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Gaskin posted a
.326 batting average while collecting 61 hits, 37 RBI and 34 runs. |
Second Basemen
 | Eric Patterson, Georgia Tech.
Patterson was a first team Atlantic Coast Conference pick and hit .388 with
10 doubles, 3 homers and 27 RBI. In addition, he swiped 29 bases. |
 | Sean Smith, Loyola Marymount
A first team West Coast Conference selection and Freshman Player of The Year in the
WCC, Smith hit like an upperclassman with a .404 batting average in his first season of
play. |
 | Jarrett Hoffpauir, Southern
Mississippi Hoffpauir was an All-Freshmen selection in Conference USA and
hit .322 with 15 doubles and 28 RBI. |
 | Marshall Szabo, Georgia
Szabo hit .367 with 4 homers, 3 doubles and 17 RBI for the Bulldogs. |
 | Nate Jaggers, Middle Tennessee St.
Jaggers had a superb season as he hit .320 with 7 homers, 10 doubles and 31 RBI. |
 | Steve Winters, Air Force
Winters nearly hit over .400 as he batted .393 with 6 doubles and 15 RBI. |
Shortstops
 | Stephen Drew, Florida St.
Named Rookie of The Year in the Atlantic Coast Conference and a second team ACC
selection, drew hit .383 with 14 homers, 10 doubles and 48 RBI despite missing 28 games
due to an injury. He is a superb defensive player as well. |
 | Ben Ingold, Wake Forest
Ingold hit .340 with 11 doubles, 2 homers and 24 RBI. |
 | Bobby Tweksbary, Vermont
Tweksbary had a superb season as he was named a first team America East selection.
He hit .340 and ranked fourth in the America East with a .463 on-base percentage. |
 | Paul Janish, Rice
Janish, a superb defensive shortstop, was a first team Western Athletic Conference pick as
he hit .348 with 10 doubles and 28 RBI. |
 | Brian Bixler, Eastern Michigan
Bixler was named Freshman of The Year in the Mid-American Conference as he hit .323
with 12 homers, 12 doubles and 46 RBI. |
 | Matt Shepherd, Southern Mississippi
Shepherd, an All-Freshman Conference USA selection, hit .342 with 10 doubles and 20
RBI. |
 | Dustin Pedroia, Arizona St.
A first team Pac-10 pick, Padroia hit .335 with 13 doubles and 33 RBI. In 165
chances as a shortstop, second baseman and third baseman, he only made two errors. |
Third Basemen
 | Matt Lein, Wofford College
Lein, Freshman of the Year and second team selection in the Southern Conference,
hit .383 with 6 homers, 14 doubles and 52 RBI. |
 | Eric Thornton, Oral Roberts
Thornton, a second team Mid-Continent Conference pick, hit .343 with 16 doubles, 6
homers, 47 RBI and swiped 6 bases. |
 | Matt Bose, Oklahoma
Bose hit .309 with 16 doubles, 4 homers and 31 RBI in a superb freshman season. |
Outfielders
 | Joe Wickman, UNLV
Wickman, Freshman of The Year and first team Mountain West Conference selection, posted a
league-record .490 batting average in his debut with the Rebels. He also put together an
18-game hitting streak and notched the MWCs best on-base percentage at .584, reading
base with 48 hits and 21 walks. |
 | Seth Smith, Mississippi
Named Freshman of The Year in the Southeastern Conference and a first team SEC
selection, Smith hit .402 with 8 doubles, 4 homers and 44 RBI. He established new school
freshman records for hits (68), singles (55), total bases (90) and RBIs (44). |
 | Dee Brown, Central Florida
Brown, Freshman of the Year and first team selection in the Atlantic Sun
Conference, hit .396 with 9 doubles, 42 RBIs and 6 stolen bases. |
 | Drew Locke, Boston College
Locke hit .452 with 13 doubles, 19 RBI and swiped 10 of 11 bases. |
 | Jake McLintock, San Diego St.
McLintock hit .366 with 16 doubles, 4 homers and knocked in 41 runs. |
 | Matt Young, New Mexico
Young, a first team Mountain West Conference pick, reached base safely in 43
straight games and hit .380 with 4 doubles, 23 RBI and 14 stolen bases. Playing LF, CF, 2B
and 3B, he made just four errors in 102 chances and was the leadoff hitter for the Lobos. |
 | Clay Timpner, Central Florida
Timpner hit .385 with 4 homers, 4 doubles and 27 RBI as he swiped 10 of 15 bases
this season. |
 | Drew Davidson, Illinois
Davidson hit .370 with 9 doubles, 8 homers and 23 RBI for the Illini. |
 | Israel Victor, N.C. Asheville
Victor had a superb year as he hit .338 with 14 doubles, 3 homers and 29 RBI. |
 | Jordan Haar, Charleston Southern
Haar hit .348 with 9 homers, 15 doubles and 28 RBI. He also swiped 9 of 11 bases. |
 | Jeff Culpepper, Gonzaga
Culpepper hit .372 with 12 doubles, 3 homers and 28 RBI this season. |
Multiple Position Athlete
 | Wes Whisler, UCLA
Whisler, Freshman of the Year in the Pac-10 Conference and a first team Pac-10 pick, had a
superb season for the Bruins as he belted 18 homers and paced the team with a .684
slugging percentage. He broke the UCLA freshman home run record when he hit his 16th round
tripper of the season. On the mound, he ranked eighth in the conference with a 4.06 ERA
and led UCLA with 59 strikeouts. |
 | Jay Johnson, Xavier
Named Freshman of The Year in the Atlantic 10 Conference, Johnson hit .335 with 29 runs
scored and 22 RBI. As a pitcher, he appeared in 18 games. He was part of Xaviers
first no-hitter since 1988 and threw six perfect innings in another outing against Rhode
Island. |
 | Cole Helms, Tennessee Tech.
Helms was named Rookie of The Year in the Ohio Valley Conference as he hit .369. He
was among league leaders in hits (75) and doubles (16). In 18 appearances on the mound,
the righthander fanned 54 batters in 53 2/3 innings for the conferences second-best
strikeout mrk (9.06 Ks/9 innings). |

Izaryk was named a first team America East selection as he hit .384 with 18 RBI this
seson. |
 | J. D. Reininger, Texas
The Freshman Player of The Year in the Big 12 Conference, Reininger hit .336 with
11 doubles, 8 homers and 32 RBI. |
