All-American Teams College -
Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper
PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release: Friday, May
28, 1999
"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S"
ALL-AMERICAN BASEBALL TEAMS
TUCSON, Ariz. The Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I
All-American baseball teams were announced today which have a potent mix of pitching and
offense.
The 16-man first team, chosen by performances up to regional
playoffs and picked by the staff of Collegiate Baseball newspaper, features 12
conference players or pitchers of the year, including: LHP Barry Zito (Pac-10
Pitcher Of The Year), LHP Todd Moser (Trans America Player Of The Year), RHP Ben
Sheets (Southland Player Of The Year), C Chad Sutter (Conference USA Player Of
The Year), 2B Marshall McDougall (Atlantic Coast Conference Player Of The Year), SS
Willie Bloomquist (Pac-10 Player Of The Year), 3B Taggert Bozied (West Coast
Player Of The Year), 3B Hunter Bledsoe (Southeastern Conference Player Of The
Year), OF Spencer Oborn (Big West Player Of The Year), OF Matt Cepicky
(Missouri Valley Player Of The Year), OF Jeff Stallings (Mid-Continent Player Of
The Year), UT Jason Jennings (Big 12 Player Of The Year),
The first team also features four starting pitchers who posted a combined 52-3 record
with an ERA of 2.65. Northeast Louisiana's Ben Sheets led the first teamers with 153
strikeouts as well as leading in complete games with 9 in 14 starts. The two relief
pitchers saved 34 games between them with a microscopic ERA of 0.94.
The offense features power and speed. The first team belted 180 homers (average 18 per
player). Jeff Stallings of Oral Roberts swiped 48 bases this year and Willie Bloomquist of
Arizona State 32. Three other players stole 17 or more. Nebraska's Harvey currently leads
the nation with a .484 batting average. Another interesting note is that Florida State's
McDougall had the most amazing offensive game in college baseball history this season as
he went 7-for-7 with 6 home runs against Maryland during a 26-2 victory. Even more rare is
that he hit for the home run cycle as he belted every conceivable type of home run. He set
three NCAA records in the game which included home runs in one game (6), RBIs in a game
(16) and total bases in a game (25).
The first team also features Collegiate Baseballs National Player of The
Year in Jason Jennings (Baylor) who was a one-man dynamo for the Bears. Heading into
regional action, Jennings had posted a 12-1 record on the mound with a 2.15 ERA and 8
complete games in 16 starts. He fanned 159 batters and walked only 43. As a hitter, he was
batting a robust .385 with 15 homers, 14 doubles and 59 RBI. Jennings ranks in the top 10
in nearly every Baylor offensive category while also ranking as possibly the best pitcher
in school history.
